The Case of Enchanted Dolls

I just received this beautiful, custom made case. Inside, are my two resin EDs: Kay and Clymenestra.

One of the gifts I had received for my birthday was a shadow box. I loved it so much, that I commissioned the participant who made it for me to make me a smaller one. My obsession with coffins and containment is well documented and this is another manifestation of it. I remember when Chad and I were in Sicily, we went to the Catacombs of the Capuchins to see the mummies, there was an exceptionally well preserved mummy of a little girl “Bambina” in a coffin with a glass lid. That really made an impression on me. I’m not sure what the impression was, but the memory of the experience had certainly stuck with me. I think it just served to further reinforce my interest in human boxes/coffins and the idea of confinement and preservation.

I really love this case. Thanks Jayne.

Those cases are quite lovely! They fit perfectly with Enchanted Dolls. I mean your resins look wonderful inside, both are so beautiful. All you need are some ornate pillows surrounding them..~

  2. Marina says:

I’m going to make some velvet lining and pillows for it later.
Now, back to watching the season finale of LOST.
I can’t wait for this show to end already.

  3. Your two resin sleeping beauty’s are so delicate and precious inside the case.. it’s the perfect size for them. They look good with their wigs swapped, too.
I’m glad you posted the pictures from your experience in the catacombs as well!

It surprises me you even have a TV! I haven’t had one for 5 years and I still don’t get nearly as much work done as you… and you have an addictive tv set with addictive shows playing on it like LOST!!!

Ah,you’ve seen Rosalia! I’ve seen her as well. After walking through the catacombs and being surrounded by decaying corpses and rotten cloth, the sight of her in the coffin almost made me panic. She looked so remarkably alive that it made me uneasy and a little bit unsure. Of course, I was much younger then.

  5. Crystal says:

That is a very beautiful box. Nothing like fine craftsmenship compared to the automated crap we have today. And the the girls look wonderful in it.
That poor little girl is very well preserved indeed. I think I would feel very bad to leave her behind in that place, she might be scared! Just think she could be older then you yet still a child.

  6. Marina says:

I don’t really watch TV very much either, Monika.

I mean, when I work I always have documentaries playing on my laptop because I like learning stuff while my hands are busy, but also Chad and I watch some TV shows after work. (doll work)

Our favorite shows are Six Feet Under, Dexter, Mad Men, CSI, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Daily show, The Colbert Report and American Dad.

LOST of course is up there too, but I’ve always kind of hated it even as I was hopelessly addicted to it. I’d roll my eyes at the end of every episode thinking:”This is bullshit”, but then I’d be eager to watch the next one.
I hated it because it was so convoluted. The season finale was profoundly disappointing too.
It’s mostly nostalgia that kept me watching it.

There are a bunch of other shows, but I can’t recall.
    Hm….maybe I do watch too much TV…..

Glad to see the resin EDs again! The more I look at them, the more they grow on me. It coud be the lighting or the more invisible joints without the leather lining… these resin girls seem to be even more ethereal than the porcelain ones.

I thought I will always love porcelain EDs only but now my mind is changing… :)

  8. Jean says:

they are both such beautys <3

I already heard about this little girl mummy and the pictures are really awesome! it looks like shes asleep O.O

  9. Amarilli says:

Now that you mention Lost, Kay with dark hair remind of Kate ;)
(I have no TV either but Lost I managed to see anyway ^_^)

  10. kelly says:

Lost would have been great if it had only taken up a season- it was soooo drawn out!

The dolls are beautiful in that case. Good work, Jayne.

  11. Annina says:

i love beautiful cases too, i’ve asked my boyfriend to make one for my doll, he is quite crafty, but he still hasn’t made it! i’d love one from cedar wood as it smells so great!

    great work Jayne!

  12. Kimmi says:

They look so beautiful in there.

Marina, you’re making it really hard to pick between resin and porcelain, and I can only pick one! The resin is so beautiful, and it feels so soft. I think Chad said they’re easier to pose and less breakable. But I’m worried about them lasting as long, fading, yellowing, the paint coming off… etc….
    Any advice?

  13. Orangey says:

Haha! Every week when you watch LOST, “lord, I can’t wait for this show to end so I don’t have to watch it anymore”. You fascinate me, Marina, haha.

You know what, I think I’ve fallen for the resin girls now. The one on the left (whom I’m assuming is Kay), has such a precious expression, and the hair color suits her beautifully. The only troubling thing for me is the impermanence of the paint, but other than that… and their aesthetic is exactly like the porcelains. They really look porcelain.

  14. Desiree says:

This is sick in a beautiful way….

  15. Andra says:

Sorry Kimmmi, but all resin dolls yellow in time. The degree to which they do so can vary from a little to a lot. A few horror stories from resin BJD owners tell how some turned .green. instead of yellow, though it’s very likely because of the abysmal resin quality and conditions they were kept in.

I don’t know how Marina’s resin develops in time, but your biggest concern should be the paint coming off from the doll’s body. Maybe Marina can repaint such dolls for a fee?…

  16. Jenny H says:

I bet if anyone could make a resin doll that didn’t yellow it would be Marina!

  17. Eva says:

There was a really awesome documentary on Rosalia that I caught a couple of years ago. It talked about the gentleman who embalmed her and how is process was rediscovered.

She does seem to have that sort of eternal ethereal quality that you capture so well in your dolls, Marina. It’s strange how death and grief can inspire such beautiful things.

  18. swdolls says:

    Amazing Marina!

  19. Jayne says:

Kimmi, I’m willing to hang out for the porcelain, so why don’t you wait with me? :0)

Marina, this sounds very goth! :) I’m with you on that one.

The Snow White’s coffin also springs to mind…

i’ve always wanted to see the cupuchin catacombs – i think, from what i remember of certain articles – that the little girl in the glass coffin was the last person to be interred there. there are definitely some lovely gothic snow-white overtones…

i’m looking forward to seeing more of your resin dolls – they’re such a different texture from the porcelaine…it’s fascinating.

  27. marie says:

wow !!! it’s incredible ! I went to this catacombes in sicilia but i didn’t remember the name ! ^^ The little girl is very strange because she looks alive… ! it’s an amazing place really.
