Another Peek

darkened-scan

This is a sketch I recently made for a doll-related project. I can’t say which project or how it’s relevant exactly, yet, but I’m very excited about it. This project has been confounding me for a couple of years, and I think I’m finally going to be able to pull it off.

It’s heavily inspired by my favorite Sulamith Wulfing drawing, but I still had a very hard time with it, as symmetry and geometry are not my strengths. I love Gothic architecture though. My passion for it was sparked in a grade six history class, when we were first introduced to different styles of architecture. Like yesterday, I remember turning the page of my textbook, and glimpsing a picture of the magnificent Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral). It took my breath away. It seemed so light and ethereal, stretching, seeking to be closer to infinity with its pointy spires…as if it could just lift off and float away.

I loved Gothic architecture since then, but having seen Duomo di Milano with my own eyes and having climbed up to the roof and walked amongst those painfully intricate arches and spires, I love it even more.

This is another project for 2012.

this looks so beautiful, i’m excited that it is of a project happening this year!
is it for the gothic coffin for Snow White / Necrophilia? hmm but it looks/feels like something different… i’m not sure

you say geometry and symmetry are not your strengths, but i have to say, i like your approach to your structural metal accessories for example, that you are letting it be organic. i find it much more interesting.
i think you can find a balance and make it work (of course you can ;)

well, looking forward to see more of this!

If you can use 3D software, the free Google Sketchup 3D modelling app and 3Dwarehouse has loads of content of just this nature. Simple to render out as a printout.

I do remember those lovely Gothic pillars you made in wax. I wondered what happened to them but I then thought well maybe that’s what you made cathedral’s headpiece with.

I was wondering, are there any original Wulfing paintings and drawings in museums? I was looking for information on the internet but found nothing.

I love Sulamith Wülfing too and she was born in the town I live in (Wuppertal!!!!) :-) )))) I love the drawing “Immortal Soul” which shows “her” little Mermaid. Are you going to make her???? If yes I will be just THRILLED!!!
The Gothic Structure is GORGEOUS and I like Gothic Architec too :-) I am lucky to live near Köln and the Kölner Dom which is just overwhelming to see it personally…

Makes me think of your beautiful doll “Cathedral”, as she was said to be part of a series, and she was used recently in the “buried doll” project too, which was also a hint at a secret project we were not fully privy to yet.

I have found a Sulamith Wulfing picture “the Moon” which shows a figure behind this architecture pattern.
Whatever, I am sure it will be beautiful
