Just before I left for Europe two months ago, I was working on the doll Cixi. This is a fragment of her sleeve gown. The gown trails behind her and the sleeves are enormous. When I came back, I’ve decided to re-work a couple of details that I wasn’t too pleased with here and there, and once I tackle those, I willl photograph her and put her on the site.

Enjoy this for now. I thought that you might find some news of this doll interesting.

Is that fabric colored by the dye sublimation process you’ve mentioned? It is really beautiful, the beadwork is amazing as always.

I love your bead work. I was fortunate enough to visit China a few years ago. Even before realizing this doll was chinese, the beadwork reminded me of one of the emperor’s wives — the intricate embroidery on silk that she did — amazing stuff — double sided. Like nothing else I’ve ever seen (before or since). I think it was when I was in Xian. (home of the terracotta soldiers)

The sleeves are very beautiful and vibrant. Has you thought about researching some classical chinese motifs, like the dragon chasing the pearl of wisidom or the carp transforming into dragons? It might provide some new inspiration for your Cixi’s costume.
