Dialogue - by Andra A.

Do tell me how you came to be
lull my ears with your storybook
Like the mist above a mirror
you twirl between the obsessions of a face

Rough limbs in the oven
crisp expectation fills the air
How many times were you burnt
for the sake of awestruck eyes?

Slim steel bones, a brush caressing
your face under keen eyes
Etched skin, the forever of the needle
carves paths in the white hills of your body

How much does it hurt to be born?

I might have seen a piece of you somewhere
up on the spires of the Scorpio constellation
Or maybe in the Pisces aquarium I dive in
You shroud in that mystery like a rose in dew.

Order my head off for insolence,
Step off your shelf for a heartbeat
And let me press your light hands
into the dark clay of my memory

So I can hold tightly on to them
and cherish how they were loved
Whenever the sun rattles my dreams
and sends me waltzing on ice.

Sometimes I wonder about why
I reach out to you yet again,
obeying your gravitational charm.
You slip another heart in your drawer.

Sleepwalking on the equinox of my mind,
those ghastly eyes glance from beyond the veil
Seeping their spell into the wounds,
vowing their beauty will save the shards of the world.

First of all, happy birthday, Marina! I have decided to use the inspiration that your dolls have given me to write a poem in blank verse. I almost never write blank verse, but my attempt to fit the images from my head into rhymes was disastrous this time. I imagined the poem in the form of a dialogue with an Enchanted Doll – I say dialogue and not monologue because of my general attitude towards dolls. Ever since I was young, I could not bring myself to treat them as if they were common objects, like a chair or a cup. I am aware they are not living beings, but still I treat them as if they had feelings and something deep inside me feels like they answer. (It sounds really strange now that I write this down...)

You have also been a great source of inspiration. I inspired myself from some ideas and stories I found on your blog and website: such as the doll making process, the scene in which you described your habit of taking Echo off the shelf and playing with her hands and the belief that beauty will save the world. I have made Scorpio and Pisces references because these two water signs are known for the compelling mystery that surrounds their nature.

I hope you will keep creating EDs for many, many, many years to come and I wish you a wonderful birthday!

~Andra
