“An Enchanted Birthday Cake” by Kelly S.
Materials : polymer clay, acrylic paint, texture paint (cupcake icing) boxes-pearlized poster board and transparency film
Happy Birthday! I hope you are enjoying all your special presents this year. I wanted to make you a cake. I love decorating cakes. Since I can’t exactly mail you a real one, I sculpted you a mini clay cake. I hope it makes you smile! Maybe you can use it for, umm... a paperweight?
I love to sculpt too, and lately I’ve been sculpting mini food for my children’s dolls, and we have so much fun with it. I have to make one of everything for everyone! My 4 year old was a bit indignant that this cake was not for him, until I painted the “girly stuff” on it.
My family likes to watch “Food Network Cake Challenges” and “Ace of Cakes”, and we daily check the “Cake Wrecks” blog.” (It’s a hilarious look at the “other side” of cake decorating).
I approached this project as if I were challenged or commissioned to create a real birthday cake for you, using elements from your dolls and their ( amazingly beautiful) clothing. The cupcakes and macaroons are just for fun. The candle is not yet attached, to avoid it breaking, so please glue it on wherever you like. In my family, for anyone over 18, we put only one candle on the cake, it’s easier to find just one instead of a 20, or 50, or 70, and it doesn’t clutter up the cake! (I forgot to put the candle on before photographing the cake - Chad)
So - enjoy! This was so much fun to make. (Please forgive its tiny flaws. It is, after all, Sculpey). Let this next year be a good one for you, may you create many new and wonderful things. You are an amazing, wickedly talented artist!.
