"Xochiquetzal" by Leonor W.

What originally started out as a costume deisgn turned into a paper doll creation. I used a photo of Primavera from the ED blog site. After looking through all the photos I picked her. I had to giggle, her name means Spring in Spanish, I think this was destiny. I hope you delight what you see.

I enjoy seeing the amazing beadwork of the Enchanted Dolls. I was wondering what an ED would look like if she were to represent the Aztec Indian. I am Mexican-American, and have always enjoyed learning more about the Mexican culture and folklore. My readings lead me to goddesses of the Aztec people. One in particular caught my interest. Here is the result of my research:

Name: Xachiquetzal, the Aztec Goddess of love and beauty. She is also known as the deity of flowers

Headwear: The image of this deity was of wood in the shape of a young woman. A gold ornament was placed over her mouth and a crown of red leather in the form of a braid was placed on her head. Green bright feathers decorated this headband in the shape of horns

Body: She was dressed in a blue turnic adorned with woven flowers made from delicate feather work. This Goddess of flowers and romantic love was also depicted with flowers in her headdress and as a young married woman with a wrap around skirt and a Quechquimitti, or highly decorated type of poncho.

Legs: marked with tattoos.

Symbols: Marigold flower, butterfly
