"Le Goût du Sable" by Marlene

Materials: Watercolours, gouache, coloured pencil on Bristol board (11"x14")

The setting, atmosphere, and pace came from an old, vivid dream of mine; I still remember how it tasted, how it smelled. There was this frail-looking ballerina dancing in front of the sea, to the low tune of a guitar in rhythm with the seagulls and wind chimes. She had very careful, broken up movements because she was made of sand.

Years later when I first saw your dolls it made me think about this dream. The same broken movements, the same fragility. Beautiful dancers made out of clay, sand, rocks. The connections didn't come right away, but eventually I thought that they would be good "sand ballerinas". The only thing I'ved added is the red ribbons, playing with the doll as would human hands. And the choice for it all to be sequential, it would be because the broken up movement is such an important part of both the dream and the dolls, tying them together.

I hope you like it
