Large Enchanted Doll!

My friends! I’m afraid I’ve been keeping a secret from you for a year and now it’s time to come clean. I want to show you something I’ve been developing. This!
lrg-head 117

Behold: A large, ball-jointed, porcelain doll! And she is going to be beautiful! And, very expensive. This is my first face prototype, with the rest of the body still to be molded. I’m especially excited about the potential for detail this scale will allow me. Just imagine the kind of mind-bogglingly detailed tattoos I can engrave on her body! Or the eyes I could paint! I’m almost dizzy with new creative possibilities.

lrg-eye 118

But there are plenty of challenges too. I still don’t know if the large porcelain parts can handle this scale without totally deforming during firing. Even tiny parts tend to sag and warp during firing, and  have to be routinely discarded because they no longer fit their respective ball-joints, so I’m very apprehensive about all this work having been for nothing when I fire a torso, or a leg and learn that this doll can not be made due to severe sag.

Face painting too, was more of a challenge than I anticipated. It was a totally different ball game than painting a tiny face. I struggled a lot with eyes and lips, but I expect I will get better and better the more I practice. Quantity eventually transcends into quality.

Unfortunately, I won’t find out if the project works a few months from now, until I fire and inspect all the parts for sag. But, I’m going all in regardless; Buying a large kiln, making the parts and having an electrician install install a new plug especially for it. All of that could turn out to be a colossal waste of resources and effort, but that’s the price of admission to being an artist.

No risk, no innovation. Wish me luck.

Woah!! …Not quite life-size yet then!!

Amily Lau managed to make an 85cm porcelain doll:

How large will yours be? I’m guessing larger than that…

Good luck. The head alone is stunning and would sell in an instant, I’m sure. Nothing is ever for nothing! xx

  4. KarolinFelix says:

    so cool ^____^

    How big will she be?
    Possibilities are really breathtaking…

and all those new mysterious ladies in the background…. I’m especially intrigued by the one with eyes up…

  5. Sylvia says:

    good luck!

    That sounds so fantastic.

may all your effort be rewarded with a most amazing new doll.

she could be nearly 1,50m tall judging by the head..a tiny yet life sized human.

The eyes would look breathtaking if the irises had more depth. This size really is a new dimension.

  6. Amal says:

If it does work out, you’re going to need a bigger suitcase!

  7. Francisza says:

Genial proyecto, felicitaciones!!!, espero que todo resulte muy bien….

  8. Jeanette says:

What a great surprise you were keeping from us!
I can’t wait to see the results and the possibilities it will lead to.

  9. Crystal says:

I keep coming back to look at all the faces, I love seeing different faces! I see there has been experimentation with different expressions.
    Beautiful!!!!!

  10. Merri says:

Marina, I love the way you never fail to surprise us! I so hope this new doll works out for you…the face looks absolutely beautiful, the eyes especially! And what about all the other beauties in the background….that’s exciting to see too. Can’t wait to see them finished as well and I notice there is a new face with moulded teeth.
The girl, second from top right immediately draws me, she has such an intriguing quality.

  11. Jayne Wourms says:

Wow! I can’t wait to see it done!!

  12. Heather T. says:

Oh, that is going to be *amazing* The face is absolutely gorgeous… (the captcha code is Ephyste large. I think you should name her Ephyste.) ;)

  13. Sylvia Leticia says:

    ~Impressive~
    Even more to Admire…
    BELLISIMA!!!!
    *Great Project*
    Congratulations :-}

  14. Bertha says:

Wow, fantastic, can’t wait to see!

  15. Katarina Saviano says:

I wish you all the best and a lot of patience with your new dolls, can’t wait to see the final project… she will be awesome and I think you already did great job with the face paint, she looks beautiful… Can I ask how big the doll is going to be?

  16. MigMig says:

Large ED! I propose to call her “LED” ;)

Changing scale is a challenge, as Marina said. I bet it will take a while before Marina’s high quality standards are satisfied.

The head seems to be 3 times the length of the ED head, so I’d say the finished doll would be no taller than 100 cm. Maybe less, is Marina decides to change the proportions slightly. I am not sure how these looong ED legs can be replicated without warping.

Heather, Ephyste sounds really good as a name, has this Greek ring to it ;o)

  17. Laura says:

Good luck! I am sure they will be stunning!

BTW it was lovely meeting you at Spectrum! (I was the girl who drove from Denver the same day you did – assuming there was only one- *grinz*)

  18. Carmen Eve says:

Good Luck! as always it is looking amazing.

  19. Manü says:

Gret news i’m sure they will be to die for and good luck.

  20. Barbara says:

Can’t wait – they’ll definitely be most wonderful – also, I imagine all the detailed clothes and accessoires you will be able to make – fantastic!!!

  21. Sandra says:

Oh wow, this idea is almost insane. I love it.
This head is so lovely. Hope everything would be fine but I’m sure you will conquer all the difficulties, as always, to make the most incredible “big” porcelain doll.

  22. Orangey says:

If you say she’ll be very expensive, I believe you! Hah. But wow! She looks very beautiful, the clarity of her features is striking. It’s likely because she is the only one in focus, but nevertheless, you’ve painted her in perfection. It’ll be interesting to see her.

  23. Svetlana says:

OMG i wish to have all items from this box :D

Marina, you did amazing job!! Wish you luck

  24. Oly says:

What a BIG surprise! She is ideal, perfect! I hope that this doll will be the most expensive in the world. Good luck! I believe you can finish it!

  25. Jugend Moth says:

Wow! wow! Wow! Thats so cool! I wish you luck, i totaly understand all chalange you will take to make this!
I loved new faces and new joints behind as well!
And one more thing- i liked so much “artistic” brush strokes in your doll painted faces. I think it’s made them look more alive and interesting. Painting large face means more details and less asymmetry. Once again for me it’s looks too perfect now.
Should be really happy to make hands in so large format:D such a pleasure:))))))

  26. Karen Vail says:

Excellent! keep growing and creating and experimenting. Your work just shines! love it all. <3

  27. Elizabeth R Hill says:

Well, I hope it goes well. You are the Goddess of the doll world! Good Luck!!, My fingers are crossed!!?

  28. Como bien dices, hay que arriesgar para conseguir algo. Esta nueva escala también te puede ofrecer nuevas satisfacciones y creo que merece la pena el esfuerzo. La cara te ha quedado preciosa. Bezozzzzz y mucha suerte.

  29. Astera says:

A new challenge! How tall do you expect her to be in the end? Her face looks beautiful, of course and I look forward to seeing her come to life.

Going beyond the face of the titan ED, in that box I see a lot of pretty amazing faces, too. Lots of new dolls are coming down the pipeline, I gather…;)

  30. You are amazing, Marina! But this does not surprise me, because I know we can always expect something great and special from you! Well kept secret! Good luck!

  31. Helene says:

She’ll need a separate plane ticket just for herself!

I’ve seen quite a few very large porcelain BJD in Japan in my time,I was not really convinced. I’m sure yours will be much more enchanting!

  32. Helene says:

Also I wonder if she’ll have a broccoli headpiece!

  33. Sailor_Orbit says:

wow I also love the head on the right the second one, just love her expression! and I also like the baby like one that has an open mouth below her. I would totally love an enchanted doll this size! I wish I could afford that/ win the lottery.

As for the warping, don’t you use the propping material inside? does it still warp after that? I also know there are some porcelains that warp less than others.

So what size is she ultimately going to be? If you feel like donating your junk pieces, please feel free to treat me like a recycling center :3 Or a collector of imperfect pieces.

  34. Sailor_Orbit says:

oh and did you sculpt it to this size or used a 3d scanner then printed the original model?

  35. I am sure you have more lined up secrets that you are not telling us. She is stunning! Have to agree with all the above, realy realy like the top right hand side second doll….oh love the face..

  36. Danielle says:

Just one of the small ones for me Marina, I’m downsizing not upsizing. The face is absolutely exquisite and a perfect gallery piece and I wish you every success. I will continue to look in admiration and wait … for just one small one.

  37. Ginie says:

Great luck to you indeed !
Can’t wait to see more …

  38. ???? says:

    ???????, ??????? ????? ?????? ?????? ?????????? ???????, ????????? ????? ??? ?????????? ?? ?????? ?????????) ?????!!!!

  39. Glynis says:

They are all beautiful, but I’m quite take by the little pale face next to the one with upturned eyes,I don’t know but she just seems to …..anyway

  40. Phoenix says:

How large will she be, Marina? I love her eyes, but the little “stars” are a little bit too much sparkle for my taste ;-P But beside that I really love how her face turned out :-) And the thought about tattoos on her makes me REALLY excited, because I adore your tattooed dolls most. Good luck with this project!

  41. Annina says:

    wow, my mind is boggled!
can’t wait to see her tattoo!
fingers crossed for you that this doll will work out!

  42. Marina! The top right hand side second doll, has a look of the Artist Dilka Bear drawings…love that face. Please give us more info on this doll…please

    :)

  43. Suok69 says:

WOW!!! This is just mind blowing. I wish you all the luck to finish this beauty. Can not wait to see when she is all done.

  44. Karen Ke says:

Aaaggh – the dreaded porcelain slump! One of the reasons I gave up working with porcelain! None of the pre-mixed clay worked for me consistently, and I didn’t have the patience to learn to mix my own. Best of luck on your new project. It’s really inspiring to watch you stretch out and challenge yourself in so many ways.

  45. Ladywithlapdog says:

    Fortuna audaces iuvat!

  46. Charlotte says:

That’s more than impressive, congrats. It puts the other custom dolls I’ve seen in the shade! Good luck with finishing her off over the next few months :)

  47. Mattias says:

What if you where to pack the parts in sand or something like that while in the kiln? Wouldnt that keep them from sagging?

  48. Dani says:

Will you make her in resin as well? It’s much more affordable and no worries with the slumping.
