More Little Red Riding Hood

More pictures, you say? Well, you got it. Enjoy.

This cape was designed in the spirit of Art Deco. I definitely had Erté on my mind when making it, but then again, I always have Erté on my mind. His work is a part of me. Same with all of my inspirational artists and experiences. It’s hard to tell where they end, and my own vision begins.

I wanted to introduce a contemporary, urban element into the cape by adding a front pocket to it. And then negating that, with the decidedly non-urban tassels. I think they kind of clash with each other, but also complete each other somehow. It’s an urban couture-art deco-medieval fusion I’ve got going here.

The basket is made from polymer clay and reinforced on the inside with leather, for extra strength. I decided to upgrade the archetypal peasant basket look to something more refined and elegant, matching the luxurious cloak. Something more along the lines of a couture fashion bag.

I’ve always wanted to make a tiny little muff. I’ve got a taste for it with this project. I’ve come down with the MMMM syndrome; Must. Make. More. Muffs.

  2. jacci says:

stunning. Marina she’s beautiful. i love all the inspirational elements that went into making the cape. she’s precious.

  3. Dalliann says:

Wow- she’s gorgeous! I love the cut of her cloak and the detailing on the basket is beautiful (I’d like a life-size one, please ~_^).

Any chance of getting a close-up of her slippers? I don’t remember seeing this design before…

  4. Amelia says:

Every detail is spot on–I don’t think the front pocket clashes at all! Adding the pocket and the “couture” basket, and the muff make her seem more real and less cliched. Nice work.

  5. MollyTheWanderer says:

I love the basket. The lace imprint on it is awesome. But what about her shoes?!

  6. Jeanette says:

She’s becoming one of my favorites, along with Cinderella.

Thank you for more pictures of her, Marina!

so jealous of your beading skills! your designs are really innovative and reinvented. I am always jealous of people who can sew really well. It’s something I am too lazy to learn on my own. Also takes a lot of 2d-3d comprehension. and your photographs are always really professional.

  11. Hazel says:

Oh, Marina, she’s amazing! Everything about her is perfect!

  12. Merri says:

I’m definitely not a minimalist, so it’s always the exquisite level of detail that captivates me!

Замечательная Красная Шапочка!!! А почему у нее яблочки в корзинке? Должны же быть пирожки и горшочек масла?:)))

    Она вегитарианка.

The doll and her outfit is outstanding!
You say about your inspiration but I guess you know by now that your works are inspiration for many of us, Marina.:)

  19. Вау! Такие трогательные ножки)))

  20. Sonja says:

The cloak is even prettier now that I can see more of the details. Does she wear anything underneath that cloak and I would also like to see those shoes, they look smoother and more heel less than usual. I really really like that muff thing, I have always liked those and you really made a pretty one with all that embroidery.

  27. Orangey says:

Oh, every single detail is exceptional- glorious. I’m sure we’re all having eye spasms and gasms and all of that, I love your interpretation of this character and every detail you’ve planned for her. Her cloak clasps are stunning! A detail that I love are her gold slippers, so small and delicate. Another is her basket, the doll world could do with such incredible accessories should you ever decide to switch over to bag making (ha). I really like her haircolor also, this dull blond.

Nice to see a fresh costumed doll!

  28. jacci says:

what’s under the cloak is a secret? please spill the details! :) you’re suprises are always worth the wait, Marina.

  29. Annina says:

Cathedral is still my very favourite costumed doll, but LRRH is my new second favourite.
and for just the costume, Agnetha’s and hers are now both my favourites (i can’t decide between them).
this cape is just so amazing, i love how it flows. i’m also happy that you kept it “simpler” in the top part of the cape with beading, love the assymetry of the beading there and that there’s just some “sprinkles”. and love the doll as a whole, perfect face for this character!
the muff is my very favourite part of the whole costume.

  30. Annina says:

first i was going to say there is a dress under this cape, but actually maybe she is a tomboy!
maybe some cool half length pants in a female cut, with cute little belt, and some uber cool top thing in this old style, maybe layered. i’m so bad at describing stuff but i could imagine some lovely clothes under!

  31. Crystal says:

I just saw those cute little gold slippers under the cape! New style shoes?

  32. Everybody wants to know about the new shoes, eh. You guys notice everything.

    I’ll post pics soon.

  33. Annina says:

ahh’course, we want to know EVERYTHING!

  34. We want to see it all…..pretty please! Love the apples did you make them too!

  35. Amal says:

Marina, what happened to this project you were working on:
    http://www.enchanteddoll.com/blog/?p=2622
…can we see more of it too?

  36. Merri says:

Amal, I too have been wondering about that sneak peek and also the post that immediately precedes it, showing the Gothic inspired sketch which was to be part of a project for this year.
I guess we will all have to just stay tuned! :)

  37. Amal says:

Lol, Merri, not just tuned …we’re wired! ^O^

  38. Merri says:

You’re right Amal! :) And wired elephants at that……we never forget!!

  39. silvana says:

Amazing work Marina, i love everything!!!!

  40. Marina says:

The project in comment 35 is still in progress, so hang on you guys. It is coming along, just not quickly enough.

Sometimes I wish I was a centipede, but then I’d be a horrible, although efficient, monster.

  41. Thank you for showing all the little details. It was a joy to look at every one.

  42. This is a very significant blog. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Keep up the good job in posting very good topics.

  43. Annina says:

ah no no don’t say that word (centipede) it brings the memory of that horrible film which i didn’t mean to watch but saw part of it as Calle was watching. no no, usch!

  44. Dani says:

Are there any galleries in the US or Canada you plan to exhibit this year or next? I am dying to see your work in person.

  45. Niiv says:

The costume is unbelievable! The beading and tassels really add a fantastic I’m utterly in love. That sweet secretive face, the color of her hair… She really IS my new favorite. Bravo on this masterpiece!
