My new doll Skyler

First of all in regards to the laminated paper doll orders: Our shipment of laminate is expected to arrive by May 10th and that’s when we can begin to laminate your dolls and process your orders. We will be contacting you this week with confirmations. But in the meantime, this….

I made myself a new doll for my personal collection and became totally infatuated with her, which is a little bit out of character for me. You see, I love making dolls a lot more than I like playing with them, but there is something special about this doll that brings out a giddy little girl in me. I’ve been playing with her for days now; changing her outfits, washing and styling her hair, making her jewelry, taking pictures of her, keeping her close on my desk while I work so that I could gaze onto her face and even putting her to bed at night…..Jesus…. My behavior is starting to scare me a little bit, because it goes against my principals on appropriate artist to artwork relationship. It’s possible I might be regressing back into childhood as a result of work-related stress. I hope I don’t go completely insane. I’m having such a good time though!

The other unusual thing is that I really love this bonnet on her, and I’m not generally a big fan of a bonnet-on-a-doll look. It’s a bit too cliche for my taste. This bonnet however, felt so right when I put it on, that it seems to have been made only for her. It was in fact, submitted for 2010 birthday contest. I appreciate this gift even more now!

I’ve had this face for over a year now, but I haven’t made a body for it until a month ago. It was a just a practice face for the first Lily doll and I kept it as china-paint reference to work from. It spent all this time on the bottom of my ‘not-quite-right’ drawer, only to emerge as, what I now consider, to be one of my loveliest dolls.

She is so pretty that i can’t get enough of her. I think I’ll make her a white tea dress from some lace I got in Paris last year. Not that I have time for such self-indulgent distractions.

Oh dear. I love her hair and all the ways you styled it, but most of all perhaps when it’s braided on top of her head. And that bonnet looks like it was made for her. She’s indeed very lovely.

  2. Luna says:

I love her can’t wait to see her with the tea dress loved all the hair styles I think she looks a lot like you when she has the side braid

  3. Nada says:

    You are really lovely Marina.
I hope you give your doll a good night kiss :)

  4. noxy says:

she looks so lovely! I adore her in the little headband. And the side braid! Love love love! <3

Quick note: shouldn’t that date read May 10th and not April 10th?

  5. Gabrielle says:

She looks as if there’s an air of peaceful charm surrounding her. Can keep on looking at her…beautiful.

  6. Jon Songserm says:

Just saw her eyes, make me feel better all day all night long!

  7. Nyxy says:

She looks so lovely and thoughtful. I’m rather curious; are you going to do an Edwardian tea dress with the lace? Some of the dresses from that era are so delicate, they would look great on one of your dolls. She would look so beautiful with the full front and bell skirt!
(I don’t mean to go on, I was just excited by the remark. I had been thinking how well that would suit one of your dolls)

  8. Jayne says:

Are you serious? How could you NOT play with her? She is absoutely divine. Go on, enjoy her :)

  9. Orangey says:

Ooooh, dear Marina! You’re finally reaching that peak of ‘insanity’ that all your fans are at, hahaha. Welcome to our world. As I say, people like dolls because they are beautiful, much like people like people for being beautiful or they like art. And once something is that beautiful you can’t help but stare at them all the time. In fact it’s really hard to put them down and they often linger around on your desk or wherever you are.

Don’t worry, there’s nothing more normal. She is a little angel! I really love the delicate, soft color of her hair, it suits her pale skin marvelously. And her bonnet, wow, you’re right, it was definitely meant to grace her head. She might fit in well on a breezy, grassy plain, staring out at the fields.

  10. Diana says:

Wow, she really is perfect!!! I wish i had your skills so i could make something like this for me. And i understadn that you can’t sto playing with her hahaha!

  11. Leslie Sirag says:

    She is exceptionally lovely!
But do you mean to say your dolls don’t talk to you, tell you what they want, complain when they’re naked or feel neglected, etc.? Amazing!

  12. Annina says:

ooh she is just so lovely ♥ ♥ ♥

  13. Ama says:

Me encanta esa mirada, me recuerda a los retratos de Amadeo Modigliani, mujeres languidas, etereas, pero a la vez con caracter, muchas felicidades por el gran trabajo y un gran beso.

  28. Amy says:

Oh, she is so lovely, Marina!

I almost would like to see her in a darker colour, to contrast with her pale colouring. I imagine a lovely dark green or brown velvet jacket.

I love the hat on her as well, it suits her perfectly!

  29. Eiko says:

Wow, she really is amazing. Such a loevly girl. The bonnet looks perfect for her.

I’m glad to hear that you’re having fun playing with her. Sanity is overrated so enjoy your playtime with her.

  30. Mackenzie says:

Truly lovely! If she is staying in you personal collection, perhaps you could make several paper dolls with different outfits :D

And I agree with comment 28, I would love to see her in darker colors – I imagined an eggplant colored evening gown(with the bonnet)!

But no matter what you decide to do with her she is gorgeous!

  31. Marcia says:

  36. Crystal says:

  41. MollyTheWanderer says:

She reminds me of both Luna Lovegood (from Harry Potter), and a Jane Austin girl (perhaps Elizabeth Bennet). She is really beautiful. I hope you do make her that tea dress, but perhaps also something from the georgian period?

  42. MollyTheWanderer says:

Sorry, are you going to put up a gallery for her? And Mackenzie said she would be pretty in eggplant, I agree with that.

  43. Crystal says:

It would be lovely to see all of your personal collection in a gallery.

Your creations remind me the reason why I kept playing with dolls up to when I was 15 years old (in secret, hehe)… Feels great to know some people acutally make a living out of it ! Keep up the great art !!

  52. Silvana says:

This face is so beautiful, is one of my favorites. I think it looks like you, specifically their eyes. I’m in love with her. I also had one that would be crazy, would play with her, and also close to sleep … lol …

  53. waterrose says:

I just found your site through Pinterest and am enchanted. I’m going to be here for a while looking around and enjoying your beautiful creations. You have such talent!

  54. trinlayk says:

the thing about making art, maybe especially “art toys” is that sometimes you really DO need to make something that is just for yourself.

(I’ve got a couple plushies I made for myself that I take around with me on “field trips” and take photos of them… maybe it’s silly but it seems to help me keep what little sanity I have left.)

  55. Mil Delicias says:

    Congratulations on your work
    The dolls are beautiful

  56. Dori says:

Hi! I stumbled on your website by accident, but i’m so glad i did. So many beautiful works of art! You are truly talented.
This doll reminded me of the revival of народные fashions in 19th century Russia. Her face is so sweet and sad, like an old романс… maybe like this one? :)

  57. Ilona says:

I love her so much. She made me fall in love with my Lily even more. I’m speechless.

  58. Nathalie Ortega García says:

    Dear Marina,
there’s nothing wrong or insane on playing with dolls. I can imagine (as a doll maker myself)that you’re very proud of her and, perhaps, that reflects that your biologic clock it’s telling you that the time to become a mom has arrived… who knows?. This is the way I feel whem I’m deep in the process of making a doll in polymer clay and I feel very bad when I consider to sell it; so I keep her only for me (this is the positive point of not being Marina Bichkova: I can keep every doll, no-one is going to ask for buying a doll!,Ha,Ha,Ha!!.No, now seriously, your doll is so beautiful it hurts!; it looks like Luna Lovegood (as said Mollythewanderer)or like Marianne Dashwood.I think she will look stunnig with anything you make for her!.
    Kisses,
    Nathalie.

  59. Marina, she is awesome as are all of your dolls, your an amazing artist and really inspire me as an artist to continue to improve. My dolls are so no where close to your expertise, i can only hope one day to be a tiny bit as great as you…i really can’t tell you how much i admire your work…its magical..
I was wondering if you’d ever considerd making a vampire or ghost bride of sorts, some thing a bit gothic yet not morbid…sort of a beautiful lost soul type thing…i think that would be so cool and a perfect addition to your cllection…but of course this is simply a suggestion…as your vision and creativity are the best i’ve ever seen in any doll on the market ever…bright blessings…Christen B.
