New Silver Casting project

So, this is that ambitious project I mentioned on Twitter a few of days ago.

It’s a wax carving of a collar for Enchanted Doll. It’s impossible to carve something like this by hand, so I designed it and handed it over to another artist/technician, who rendered it as a 3D model and had it carved by a computerized carving machine. When my casting technician Ryan saw this, he said: “This is by far the craziest thing you’re ever done, and if I can cast this piece for you, it will be the height of my casting career”, because apparently, this thing is un-castable. But then again, a lot of jewelers would consider many of my wax carvings impossible to cast because they are unconventional jewelry pieces, while Ryan was somehow able to make them work.

I made some adjustments  to the collar after I took this picture. I spent 8 hours, painstaikingly overlaying the carving with tiny wax granules by hand. It looks just exquisite. I love it and can’t wait to see it on a doll.

Earlier this week I was thinking about the collar that was on Mermaid Song from several months ago and just idly wondered what the progress was on the collars. Now I know! I really, really can’t wait to see how this new one looks.

That’s really amazing. If you didn’t try ambitious things you probably would get bored and be dissatisfied with your dolls. I’m glad you shared the photos of the wax carving. It’s sad that in order to cast the silver, the wax has to be destroyed.

    Oh. My. God.

That is the most delicate piece of art I’ve ever seen.

You my dear are an evil genius. Evil because I want to posses anything you produce!

    xx,
    nunt

I didn’t realize the extent that you had to go to produce such a thing! The amount of problem solving, energy and patience it takes! This is truely something you must love and be dedicated to.
    That is surely evident.

When I first saw the picture I could not understand how you did this in wax! It’s astonishing! Jewels that are made with 3D rendering softwares tend to be a bit too “artificial” for me, but this collar is just amazing!
    I think it’s castable, it’s a great challenge but I think it’s doable :)

  9. Marina says:

Wouldn’t that make you kind of…evil, Nunt? :)

I an very curious about the hinge on it. Will it fit like an Elizabethan collar I wonder? Can’t wait to see it finished!
