Not your average micro tattoo – Marquise de Pompadour doll

Having been blessed with a good eyesight (thanks dad!), I’d always scoffed at the idea of working under magnification, even though I suspected it would have been helpful for the small scale of my dolls. But working with bare eyes was a source of pride for me and I stubbornly refused to accept any artificial optic assistance before it was absolutely medically necessary for me to wear glasses. I was such a fool. I had no idea what I was missing.

Getting a magnifier a year ago gave the ability to engrave the finest micro tattoos I never imagined possible. It instantly upped my skills and unlocked a new difficulty level in this doll-making game. I’m playing on hard mode now. And loving the results.

This doll, Marquise de Pompadour, is my first doll tattooed entirely under a magnifier. Because of that, she features the most advanced tattoo engravings ever seen on Enchanted Dolls that took almost a year to engrave. If I wasn’t feeling slightly unhinged from all that tattooing (at the moment), I’d be giddy with joy at the sight of this little French beauty. She is going to be auctioned off on May 13th. I’ll show and tell you more about her in the days to come.

As for me, I’m never going back to pre-magnifier tattooing. Not because I can’t, but because I don’t want to. Those years are behind me.

She is stunning, I can’t wait to see her completed!

I remember what I chatted to you before about eye sights tend to deteriorate after certain age :-) So to protect them from younger age would be beneficial! Always enjoy watching your arty process!

Marina, how will you ever be able to part with, Marquise de Pompadour? Her tattooing is exquisite and all the hours that it took you to complete her tattoos, is beyond comprehension to me! I wish you Good Luck with your Auction and wish that I was the lucky one to win her! You are amazing!

I can see where this is going… it’ll be bionic limbs next! …Just kidding! – I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using the tools available to us. Tools don’t necessarily make work easier, but they can make it better. After all, invention and innovation come when someone devotes themselves to doing something better… like your china paint storage box. I’m sure you have more inventions in you too!

I love the result. Indeed the engravings looks different, compared to your oldest tattooed dolls, the tattoos looks more detailed and ultra polished. The details are finer and I love the tattoo composition.

Good Morning! To Madame Enchanted Doll Maker/Excellent Artist, your work is beyond most of the lovely doll work I view many years now in my old lady life.
I have had two eye operations and a third to boot to rid the right eye of black dots and clouds. And now use on my own silly doll making time a magnifier lens as glasses.
Your artistic work is a wonder in the making and surprised you share as much as you do.
My work is simply what I remember from the crazy relatives of my dads and my mother’s extravagant behaviors from 1870-2009 of her family’s background.
Do you give talks on your art background and also why you chose doll making as an art?

Thank you for your heartfelt comment. As far as I know, Marina does not give talks. I believe she once said that she always knew she wanted to be a doll maker. Kind Regards.

    Hello Marina,

doll is beautiful, amazing work and detail. Only thing I don´t like is that little heart with I love Louie. I think it doesn´t suit ED style, elegance and simplicity. Otherwise doll is beautiful

  13. Clara says:

Wearing her heart on her sleeve? Beautiful. Particularly like the effect of the tiny flowers!

As always, thank you for sharing your creative process. I am in awe.

The detail is truly astounding! Congratulations, the results of the past year’s hard work has really paid off even if it has left you a little cross eyed lol!!! She is absolutely exquisite. I am now holding my breath to see you work the rest of your magic on her wig and costume!

  16. Crystal says:

The engraving is amazing even with magnification! I too was very proud of my eyesight but even 20/20 can’t beat a good magnifier! She surely is light years from anything I’ve ever seen! It looked like in that film you carved her after she was soft fired? Either way, soft fired or raw green ware, it must have been some task! Of course I get so impatient because I just know her face is just going to totally blow us all away and that is likely to be the last thing you show us. But if you did her face with magnification too, well, I expect to fall off my chair!

Magnification devices ROCK!! Wonderful, wonderful work.
