The tattoo playfully mimics dna and molecular bonds and how they can alter anything within us . The theme is based on the beauty of bugs’ eyes and applying the idea of multiple sets of eyes to human beings.

Tattooed trompe l’oeil armour reflects our longing for invulnerability, strength, enlightenment, and inner peace. Ironically, the physical body is still vulnerable to injury, exploitation, and death.

The Elixir of Immortality

The Chinese legend of the moon brought about the yearly celebration, the Mid-Autumn festival. The legend is told such that long ago there were ten suns, resulting in times of difficulty. It was taken upon Hou Yi, who shot down nine of the ten suns with his arrows. In result of this incredible feat, Wangmu, the queen of heaven, bestowed upon him the Elixir of Immortality that would ascend him to heaven and make him a god. Although, Hou Yi did not want to leave his wife, Chang’e, so instead gave the elixir to her to keep. But unbeknownst to them, a man observed the whole event. Three days later while Hou Yi was away, the man sought out the potion. Having infringed into their home, he demanded for Chang’e to hand over the elixir. Knowing she could not win this fight, she opened the bottle and downed it’s contents. Immediately, she ascended to heaven, but her great love for her husband brought her to the moon, the closest place to earth in the heavens.

The tattoo depicts the Elixir of Immortality flowing through Chang’e’s body, withholding a sense of power and delicacy whilst framing her current residing, the moon.

These sketches and finals show the placement and design of the tattoo, as well as a simple, flowing costume. The costume is a sheer, translucent dress (with a milky white quality to it) with a silk robe to go on top (that opens in the front, displaying the tattoo). A thin, long scarf also goes along with the ensemble. The costume is meant to mirror the tattoo’s movement and resemble the flow of water/liquid as well.
