Rose Pompadour

Madame de Pompadour is remembered today primarily for being a chief mistress and a life-long companion to the King Louis the 15th of France, but she was also a truly remarkable, influential, and accomplished woman in her own right. In fact, she was such a sophisticated and influential trendsetter that her keen sense of taste and aesthetic helped shape the Rococo and Neo-classical styles, and transform Paris into a fashion capital of the world.

I was particularly compelled to make Madame de Pompadour into a porcelain doll because she shared my passion for porcelain and worked hard to revive, establish, and promote porcelain manufacturing in France and greater Europe. I feel a keen sense of gratitude for her contribution to this art form through her patronage and commitment, and believe that her efforts 250 years ago might have made my own career possible today.

There is a beautiful shade of Sevres porcelain named lovingly in her honour – Rose Pompadour.

I too wanted to honour this great woman by creating her portrait in a medium she had loved so much. I believe she would have enjoyed seeing herself as a porcelain doll.

She is my Rose Pompadour.

hey, Marina, just wondering, how many hours went into this doll? its been close to a couple years hasn’t it? or at least how many hours were put into the tattoo engravings and wig especially? i’m curious cause i’m guessing each doll has a basic time frame for being cast and all, but the embellishments have to take time, being specific to each doll. and with each new one you create i know you’re fine tuning well honed skills so it has to probably take more time with each doll as you progress as an artist as well, trying out new concepts and all.

I had no idea Madame de Pompadour was such an influential figure in the Rococo era or porcelain. I love how each and every one of your masterpieces always has such a beautiful and compelling story behind them Marina. This just makes this breathtaking beauty all the more special to me, it adds another layer of life into this glorious vessel. She is just so captivating Marina, Daphne will always be my favorite of your works, but this girl is something TRULY special, she is complete and utter magic.

I wonder did you make the seat she sits on as well? It’s perfect!

I guess this is about two years late, but it’s interesting that madame will carry Portuguese Crown Caravelas in her hair :)
