Kay – 2010-2019

This is Kay, a 2010 original resin doll from my own personal traveling Museum Collection. This doll is unique, because much like my porcelain dolls, she is connected with 12 individual metal springs and has painted eyes. She is one of the four test prototypes ever made; all my other resin dolls are strung with elastic cord and have glass eyes.

All the painting and body blushing is original, and has never been retouched. Nine years after casting, and the high-quality resin is still in a pristine, pearly-white condition, having withstood the test of time and sun. Partially because of her durability, and partly because of her beauty, Kay has been my favourite companion doll, whom I brought with me on my travels around the world, and who was featured in a number of magazines and shown in galleries as a part of my private traveling collection.

The cotton dress is constructed out of a very rare, antique, 17th century lace collar. It is extremely fine, translucent and delicate, with remarkable three dimensional embroidery on gauzy cotton. I embellished it with additional embroidery of 566 Fresh-water pearls, 40 Mother-of-pearl flowers, 20 silk bows, 17 Swarovski crystals and hundreds of glass seed beads.

The shoes are 14k gold-plated bronze, with embellishments of pearls, silk bows, enamel and beads. The wig is removable and magnetic, made of natural mohair. She comes with a flexible stand and a custom tin box.

“Once, I can’t remember, I was long ago, someone strange. I was innocent and wise, and full of pain. Now that I’m a woman, everything has changed. Once, when I was searching, somewhere out of reach, far away, in a place I could not find, or heart obey. Now that I’m a woman, everything is strange.”

– Lady Amalthea (Unicorn), The last Unicorn 1968, Peter S. Beagle.

The Last Unicorn 2018

This doll was inspired by a character from a 1968 fantasy novel by Peter S. Beagle, who undertakes a quest to find others of her kind, becomes a mortal woman and begins to experience human emotions. It is one of the saddest, and most beautiful fairy tales written, and I believe it is a poingant allegory for environmental destruction, rampant consumerism, loss of biodiversity and extinction. But it is also about love, courage, hope and transformation.

“I am afraid of this mortal body…”

– Lady Amalthea (Unicorn), The last Unicorn 1968, Peter S. Beagle.

I’ve worked on this piece for over three years, dismantling and reassembling it multiple times as the image of the Unicorn slowly shaped itself. The 24k gold-plated bronze head piece was inspired by Hans Holbein’s 1539 portrait of Anne of Cleves, who was the 4th wife of King Henry the 8th. It is very light for its size, weighing only 82.3g (2.9oz). The costume is constructed with gold appliqué embroidery on fine tule, 2,435 gold-lined glass beads (24k), 1,880 seed beads, 635 Swarovski crystals, 148 Mother of Pearl flowers, 46 fresh water Pearls and 21 Amethyst gemstones.

“She will remember your heart when men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits. Of all unicorns, she is the only one who knows what regret is – and love.”

– Schmendric, the Magician, The last Unicorn 1968, Peter S. Beagle.

2017 – One-of-a-kind. Commissioned piece.

I used vintage French lace, Victorian millinery, parts of antique Kinfisher pin, dazzling Swarowsky crystals and of course, hundreds of Pearls to create a tiny wedding dress fit for a queen!

Enchanted Fan sits on a Napoleon III era French Globe de Marriee, which was traditionally used to display wedding momentos, such as the wedding tiara, corsage and shoes.

Madame de Pompadour is remembered today primarily for being a chief mistress and a life-long companion to the King Louis the 15th of France, but she was also a truly remarkable, influential, and accomplished woman in her own right. In fact, she was such a sophisticated and influential trendsetter that her keen sense of taste and aesthetic helped shape the Rococoand Neo-classical styles, and transform Paris into a fashion capital of the world.

I was particularly compelled to make Madame de Pompadour into a porcelain doll because she shared my passion for porcelain and worked hard to revive, establish, and promote porcelain manufacturing in France and greater Europe. I feel a keen sense of gratitude for her contribution to this art form through her patronage and commitment, and believe that her efforts 250 years ago might have made my own career possible today.

There is a beautiful shade of Sevres porcelain named lovingly in her honour – Rose Pompadour.

I too wanted to honour this great woman by creating her portrait in a medium she had loved so much. I believe she would have enjoyed seeing herself as a porcelain doll.

She is my Rose Pompadour.

Sayan’s crown incorporates elements of Tibetan and Mongolian tribal jewelry, while her name was inspired by the Sayan mountain range between Northern Mongolia and Southern Siberia, close to where I spent my childhood.

Orchid’s floral crown was inspired by the traditional Kingfisher hair ornaments of the Qing dynasty.
Each flower in this crown is cast in sterling silver and enameled to resemble the color of Kingfisher feathers. The composition is accented with two pendants, 12 corals, 10 turquoise, 6 Opalites and golden disks.
