And finally -The New Enchanted Rubenesque!

Well, it's been a long wait and a lot of work, but it was all worth it. I am very pleased and excited to finally unveil to you my new curvaceous doll - The Rubenesque!

Now, before I hear another word (!!!) about how she is not technically, and I quote "fat enough" to be called a Rubenesque, please allow me to point out that the dictionary definition of Rubenesque states that it is: "Plump or rounded, usually in a pleasing or attractive way". Now, look at the comparison of my two dolls and tell me that she is not pleasantly rounder than my other doll. I rest my case. She IS a legitimate Rubenesque.

She is also slightly taller than my first doll. The feet are the same size though, as are the hands.

I haven't had a lot time or space to photograph her in a variety of poses or settings because my studio is filled with stacks of books and boxes right now, but sometime this week you will get to see more of this doll. In a brand new head ornament I made for her. It's pretty awesome. You'll see.

This very FIRST Rubenesque doll will be available for sale from the Strychnin gallery at the end of the month. More information and pricing coming in the next post.

So, tell me. How do you like her compared to my slimmer doll?

Like her, love her or, dare I say it, hate her?

Blank Porcelain

A handful of hands. I never usually have this many blank pieces all at once, as each doll gets cast, sanded, painted and strung individually, but since I've mostly been too preoccupied with the book to complete a doll lately, these unpainted parts have accumulated over the past few months. Soon, they will become dolls. A couple of these will become Echos, while one of these heads will become the latest show doll for the exhibition at the Strychnin Gallery in May.

Oh which one, which one will it be, I wonder?

Annual birthday contest postponed to next year.

Dear Enchanted Doll Fans,

Time has ran away from me again. :( I had my hands so full the last 6 months, that I didn't notice my birthday creeping closer and closer. I very much regret to inform you that the 4th annual ED Birthday contest has been postponed to next year due to time constraints.

I apologize, since I know that like me, many have been looking forward to the contest. The Enchanted Doll book has taken a lot out of me, and combined with other commitments, I just couldn't come up with a contest theme in time.

I am very pleased to say however, that the Enchanted Doll book is nearly all printed and bound, and should arrive here in about 2 weeks. Just in time for my birthday! We have started emailing those who purchased it with rates on shipping. If you haven't received an email with shipping information, just hang on, as we will likely get to you soon.

In other news, I am working on a brand new doll for an upcoming (May) show at Strychnin gallery in Berlin, Germany. Stand by for more details. Right now I am nervously biting my nails while I wait to see if the crazy new head ornament I've spent over 150 hours designing and milling for it is going to work out. We shall see, we shall see...soon.

Post Moscow

I've been back from Moscow for a couple of weeks now, resting up after a pretty intense trip. The Salon show was fantastic and the Moscow weather was lovely. Very summer like. I've had a very long summer this year, because I caught bits of hot weather here and there in my travels. I'm really looking forward to staying put for a few months and working on a brand new collection.

I wanted to thank all those who came to visit me at the exhibition. Special thanks goes to Dima and Katya-thanks for the wine and a pleasant river cruise, Sasha and Lena-thanks for the roses, Katya- thank you for bringing us Chad's favorite chocolate truffles from St. Petersburg! Svetlana, thank you for organizing the show, there is just never enough beauty in the world. I hope to be able to attend again.

Hey, what is that? A doll hand zipper pull? :)While packing for this trip, I noticed that the zipper pull was broken on my favorite sweater, so I attached a bronze hand to it and now I feel like I'm shaking hands with my doll every time I zip. I think I might make some more.

Up Next: The map of my travels in China!

Back in Town!

Hey gang, I'm back from my recent exhibitions in Russia and travels in Scandinavia! It was both a prolific and an adventurous trip, if a little bit stressful. But then again, Chad and I are not the ones for relaxing vacations, exactly, so it was business as usual.

Cixi

Chandelier

Swan Princess (updated)

These dolls (and others) will be on display at the Doll Time International doll exhibition at the Union of Artists exhibition center from June 10th-13th in St. Petersburg.

Traveling Collection 2011 in St.Petersburg

This is a group shot of my traveling collection, minus Snow White, Prince and Dunyazada, who didn't fit in frame (out of aesthetic considerations). Most of these dolls are mine, kept in my own personal collection for traveling shows, however, there are some new, recently finished dolls such as Cixi, Crystal Chandelier, the Wife, Stepmother (formerly Aisha) and an upgraded Swan Princes with a new face and body (didn't like the old one). A few of those dolls are for sale. Price list and individual photos of the new dolls coming up shortly. Sorry to keep you guessing still, but we're just so busy right at this moment, tying all the loose ends here, in St. Petersburg. We haven't had time to see anything yet, due to the show preparations. Our hotel right across from the Hermitage museum, which is awesome, because that's the first place I want to visit once we're done work.

Stay tuned.

Upcoming show for summer 2011

Attention Russian and EU Enchanted Doll fans: The Enchanted Doll Traveling Collection of 25 dolls is coming to St.Petersburg this summer!

I have two upcoming shows in St.Petersburg: first one is the Musical Olympus foundation charity ball at the Ekaterininsky Palace on May 21st, Here:

And the second one is a Doll Time International doll exhibition at the Union of Artists exhibition center from June 10th-13th. Here:

I will be attending both events, but while the first one has a restricted access, the second one is open to the public!

The three day event will take place from June 10th-13th, at the  Exhibition Centre of St. Petersburg Union of Artists, st.Bolshaya Morskaya, 38., featuring Enchanted Dolls as a special guest. I'm very honored by the invitations to both shows and excited to attend.

The new doll Crystal Chandelier will be among the 4 recently finished costumed dolls I'll be showing as a part of this traveling collection, plus my first version of Cinderella and an upgraded Swan Princess. Full list and pictures of participating dolls will be available here any time between now and Tuesday. We're leaving for Russia on Wednesday.

In the two weeks between the events, Chad and I will be hanging out in Finland, Sweden and possibly Norway. Due to the intensity of the preparations for the shows, I've had no time whatsoever to plan anything else or even buy a dress for the ball yet......Gahhh!!!!

Twenty To Midnight-upcoming London show

Here are some preview shots of my new doll-Twenty To Midnight. She is going to a show in London at the end of this month.

Twenty To Midnight is a one of a kind tattooed doll, featuring a silver-plated, limited edition bronze casting of a hand carved Rococo wig sculpture. The wig is magnetic and removable, with one of a kind gemstone accents of 6 Pink Tourmalines and 2 Rubies.

Midnight's china face painting was loosely inspired by Audrey Kawasaki's beautiful girls.

Midnight's silver-plated, bronze slippers are accented with solitaire Rubies, glass beads and tiny bows.

The finished wig weighs only 119.1 grams, or 4.2 ounces and is relatively light compared to some of my other metal head ornaments, such a Sterling Snowflake crown or a Sterling Cathedral crown. I am immensely pleased with how it turned out, as I really didn't anticipate such a close fit to the contours of the head because of the shrinkage and inevitable warping of the model during molding and casting. The inside of the wig is lined with layers of soft leather to maximize the tightness of contact.

We are still working on the web gallery for Twenty To Midnight, but I'll post more photos and information for her on Monday or Tuesday.

Today I have to get her ready for shipment.

Concept sketch for London show doll

This is a part of a concept sketch for her tattoo.

And this is a side view of the wig model.

I'm assembling the final pieces of the project today and hoping to finish shooting by Friday or Saturday. The carving of the wig and preparing it for molding took almost an entire week on non-interrupted work. It was hard on the eyes. On day five, around 10 in the evening my vision began to blur so much, that I could no longer see the texture properly. It's like, my body just said: "Ok, enough. You're crazy and I've had it. Efff this." So, I took a day off and drank a bottle of wine while watching Lord of the Rings again. And then R.E.D. Again. What a fun movie.

Anyway. Completion of Twenty To Midnight is pending. Then, the 2011 rules for the upcoming, annual Birthday Contest.

Upcoming Exhibition in London

This New Year for Enchanted Doll begins with a group exhibition at the ShowStudio gallery in London UK, titled To Bed.

I'm contributing one doll to this show, which will include photography and video installations by various artists, including Andy Warhol's Sleep. I don't have the full list of participating artists yet, but I'll be posting more information about this exhibition. The show opens on January 26th.Above, is a snap shot of the new wax model for the show doll. She is in the last stages of completion, and I plan to finish her by the middle of next week. This piece, titled Twenty To Midnight is a nude, featuring a monochrome, one of a kind tattoo on her torso and thighs, the new Marie-Antoinette shoes and of course this fabulous, new ultra-limited edition head dress with one of a kind accents. I already have it cast and everything. Can't wait to show you.

I will post purchasing details next week, after I send her on her way and get some down time. In the meantime, I think I'll post a concept sketch for her tattoo in a day or two; as soon as I get around to scanning it.

For those who are not acquainted with this doll face yet, she is my wax-modeling head and not the doll which will be featured in this show. That one will be much better.

Enchanted Doll in NY fashion week!

Attention Enchanted Doll fans of New York: My beautiful Silk Road doll is continuing her tour of the USA. After debuting in Seattle's Artful Henna show in August, she's gone on to New York city to be exhibited at the Red Bull Space in the SoHo district during New York fashion week!

I had decided to change her short cropped hair style to long, blond locks and in the spirit of fashion, gave her a pair of Bronze stilettos to fit in with the the runway models.

Chad and I almost flew to New York for the weekend to attend the event ourselves, but then we found that Canada Customs is about to release the entire container of new ED tin boxes any day, which means we have to be here to receive and unload the shipment at our warehouse storage with only 24 hours notice. Timing was bad.

But that's ok, because there are talks of doing an Enchanted Doll exhibition in NY in 2011 or 2012.

Meanwhile, the Beauty had sold. I couldn't decide whether to be happy or sad about that. Although I have a very strict policy of not getting attached to my work, I did grow very fond of her. I hope to see her one last time in London this fall before she leaves forever.

Beauty and the Beast, or the Stockholm syndrome in fairy tales.

Beauty and the Beast, or the Stockholm syndrome in fairy tales.2010The Stockholm syndrome is a human defense mechanism in life-threatening situations. Medical dictionaries define Stockholm syndrome as an extraordinary phenomenon in which a hostage begins to identify with and grow sympathetic to their captor, essentially mistaking a lack of abuse as an act of kindness.

In my opinion, the fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast is a romanticized hostage situation, where the Beast is a narcissistic sociopath, while the Beauty is his vulnerable hostage who is losing touch with reality and falling in love with her captor to survive a deeply traumatizing ordeal.

Moreover, the very act of romanticizing a fundamentally disturbing account of a woman’s abduction, subjugation and unlawful imprisonment into a pretty fairy tale to teach girls compassion and kindness towards monsters, seems to be a manifestation of a Stockhom syndrome in itself, perhaps to facilitate survivial in a world of systematic abuse and violence against women.

Materials and Construction:

Ball jointed, porcelain doll, unique steel spring articulation, permanent China paint finish, hand cast limited edition Sterling Silver helmet with one of a kind accents of Bali silver, detachable French bridal veil with Swarowsky and Cubic Zirconium crystals, hand cast Sterling Silver stilettos, Grey Moonstone cabochon pendant, Bali silver accessories, floral motif engraving on arms and abdomen inspired by William Morris print, removable magnetic wig of ultra-fine natural Mohair, genuine leather lining in the joints and a custom welded steel stand.

New doll-Beauty and the Beast.

bandbThis is what I've been up to lately: working on this new doll for the group show in London at the Show Studio gallery. The exhibition "In Wolf's Clothing" will open on September 9th and will run throughout the London fashion week and until the end of October. The gargoyle in the shot for composition purpose only. It doesn't come with the doll and I didn't make it. It's a bookend by Windstone, that I grabbed off my bookshelf as I roamed my place in search of fresh photo props. It worked out perfectly. I don't know why I never noticed it before. It's like it was waiting for this specific doll to be made to suddenly come to my attention.I'll post more pictures of her within a day or two. Too tired now. Must sleep. So much exciting stuff is happening this month.....You'll see.

Setting up the Fragility group shot

groupshot-880Setting up the final shot of the Fragility series before packing away the dolls for the flight to Berlin. Those last two weeks were such a blur of sleepless nights and working-like-a-zombie-days, that I don't remember much of what happened. I don't even recall how I finished the last couple of dolls. Short term Amnesia. Really. After I got some sleep in Berlin and recovered a bit, I was pleasantly surprised that they turned out very nice.I think I'm wearing my airport clothes in the shot.

Fragility Group Shot

group2Here are all the dolls from the Fragility show together in a group shot.  Posing them like this was a fun challenge; fun in trying to get them all to fit together, but a challenge to have them not block each other.  Seems each one wanted to steal the focus of the shot.At this point, most of the show is sold out and all but five dolls remain available at the gallery. We're at the art fair in Basel with the gallery until tonight, but tomorrow we're parting ways as Chad and I leave for Bern and the beginning of our actual holidays in Switzerland. Woo! I hope the weather improves. Sightseeing in the rain is unpleasant.

Anna Karenina and The Bloody Lady Elizabeth Bathory

I will be posting the artist's statements I wrote for each doll that were hung next to them in the gallery. I was wanting to do it earlier, but didn't get around to it with all the preparations for the opening.

Anna Karenina Survives The Train. 2010

anna21This one-of-a-kind engraved, porcelain doll, features a complex, full-body, color tattoo of an orthopedic corset and a prosthetic leg device. Face is one of a kind. Magnetic wig is removable, and permanently styled into intricate braiding adorned with a Victorian copper comb. This doll is based on the main protagonist from the majestic and tragic novel Anna Karenina written by Leo Tolstoy. I tried to re-imagine Anna’s heartbreaking love story with a different ending where she survives her horrific suicide attempt at jumping under a slow-moving train, but sustains severe, disfiguring injuries, losing her left leg, mangling her left arm and breaking her back instead.I took the metaphor of straight-laced, yet decadent attitudes of Victorian Russian society that governed and ultimately decided Anna’s fate, and interpreted it in a literal, visual way as her medical bondage braces and prosthetic devices, which now literally hold her shattered body together. She is protected, yet restrained by the inhumanity of social conventions. I wonder if surviving her suicide would make any difference in her destiny despite her transgression of the status quo.Amongst a myriad of deeply philosophical issues, the biggest question that the novel Anna Karenina leaves one with is perhaps whether love can really conquer all.A part of me wants to believe that Anna’s near death experience would serve as a powerful epiphany for her and her lover count Alexey Vronsky, and transform their deteriorating relationship back into a loving union it once was, but a realist in me questions this idealistic approach, rationalizing that her difficult situation in life brought on by breaking the social rules and conventions of the day, and can not have a long-term, happy resolution unless all the stigma of her illicit relationship is removed and her public image reinstated. The incident may cause a profound spiritual awakening for her and Alex, but they will continue to face the same external problems of gender inequity, which have undone their powerful love before.Sadly, their first near death experience is a testament that perhaps love does not conquer all: When Anna nearly dies during childbirth and Alexey shoots himself in despair of losing her, both survive and are overcome with gratitude and love for each other, but their happiness is fleeting as it provides only a temporary, idealized escape from their difficult situation, followed by an eventual boredom, loneliness, frustration and inevitable return to a grim reality. Will this, second near death experience with an added problem of Anna’s disability be any more profound and lasting than the first? Perhaps, but I’m skeptical. And yet, a romantic in me believes in Anna’s life, while John Milton’s quote from Paradise Lost encourages me to believe that perhaps there could have been a happy ending for Anna Karenina after all:“The mind is its own place, and in itself, Can make a heav’n of hell, a hell of heav’n.”Perhaps Anna and Alex could have made their own heaven in the hell that they found themselves?I re-imagined the climax scene where Alexey finds Anna broken, but alive instead of dead and mutilated on the table at the train station where they had carried her body, and the despair and grief of her ugly death turns instead into relief and a renewal of their love for each other. Just like in Disney movies, they embrace, kiss, and ride off into the sunset, leaving their superficial selves, the superficial society that bred them and all its false idols behind to live happily ever after. The End.

The Bloody Lady Elizabeth Bathory. 2010

countess31One of a kind, porcelain, ball-jointed, costumed doll. A very complex costume is assembled from 23 separate, original Sterling Silver pieces with 24k gold plating and an Indian wedding saree skirt. All clothes and accessories are removable. Face is one of a kind. Removable wig is magnetic. This doll is based on a real historical figure of Transilvanian countess Elizabeth Bathory (17 August 1560 – 21 August 1614), from the renowned Báthory family.Allegedly, Elizabeth was a sadistic serial killer who tortured and murdered as many as six hundred girls in a span of 20 years. Despite going down in history as the most prolific female serial killer with a kill rate of mythological proportions, there is very little historical evidence against her. In fact, when considered in a larger historical and political context, it appears that Elizabeth was a victim of an aristocratic conspiracy with a resulting mass hysteria, and that her original accusers were politically, financially and possibly, ideologically motivated.Regardless of evidence, history appears to be infatuated with the image of this woman as a ruthless murderer, even if this image is nothing but a myth. Her presence in history is as mysterious and secretive as her enigmatic smile, which could hide either a twisted sociopath, or an innocent victim of slander.Although we will never know the truth behind the Bloody Lady Elizabeth Bathory, we must consider these following historical facts before condemning her:There is the lack of the most basic proof: the victim’s names. There aren’t any official names on record of Bathory’s alleged victims, or bodies for that matter. It was said that she had killed daughters of peasantry as well as lesser nobility. But who are these missing women exactly? The logistics of murder don’t make sense either. Elizabeth was accused of killing around 600 girls in 20 years. That means she killed 30 people a year. That’s 1 murder every 12 days. How could such a visible public figure get away with such an astronomical kill rate for 20 years, in a region with a population of much less than three hundred thousand people? Where was she getting all these women and why was virtually nobody noticing this, except for one single minister Istvan Magyari? One would think that if daughters were going missing left and right every month in villages, there would be some sort of a public concern and even a panic. Instead, the “rumors” of murders had began to spread only after the official investigation had already started.Another interesting detail is the fact that when King Matthias of Hungary ordered the investigation into the rumors of murders, he was heavily indebted to the wealthy and influential Elizabeth Bathory. Based on flimsy, hearsay witness testimony, King Matthis had her imprisoned without any formal trial, conviction or further punishment and avoided having to repay her the large sum of money for which he lacked sufficient funds.Elizabeth Bathory’s case happened at a time of religious upheaval and hostility in Hungary. As a Transilvanian Protestant aristocrat, she was a political opposition to King Matthis, who was an Austrian Roman Catholic. My final argument in favor of Elizabeth Bathory’s innocence is that her case shows evidence not only of political conspiracy, but also of the mass hysteria phenomenon, where a runaway public fear clouds all rational judgment, leading to escalating panic and severe miscarriages of justice. Such cases and trials are often characterized by absurd accusations, unfounded witness testimony, extremely biased public opinion, coercive interrogations and incompetent investigative techniques.I see a distinct parallel between Elizabeth Bathory’s murder investigation and the of mass hysteria of the famous Salem witch trials of 1692, the Kern County Satanic ritual child abuse hysteria of 1983 and the West Memphis Three murders of 1993, where all accusations began with one person and grew out of thin air into frenzied fear and everyone conveniently forgot that a person is innocent until proven guilty beyond any reasonable doubt.
