I’ve been resisting talking in my videos, because I have this notion that a visual artist’s work must speak for itself and stand by itself - no words required. After all, isn’t that the whole entire point of visual art - to express emotions and create narratives with images, shapes, colours, and forms, not words?
, and it makes this visual artist feel the pressure to engage vocally to appease the algorithm that seems “hungry” for creators’ inner monologue. I don’t know if other visual artists out there feel the same pressure to perform and find this need for talking over their videos invasive? The algorithm kind of makes me want to scream Russell Crowe’s famous line from Gladiator: “Are you not entertained?!!”
I don’t know… maybe I just have some antiquated notions about visual ART doing all the talking. Or maybe it’s my strong aversion to drawing attention to the artist behind the ART. Or maybe I just need some practice talking over my work videos… 🤷♀️
Anyway, it won - I made one…. And I don’t hate it. Maybe it does add something to the visual art…? What do you think? Should I talk more?
